چکیده

Ab initio calculations predict a metal-insulator transition at zero temperature to occur in La4Ni3O8 at moderate pressures as a result of a pressure-induced spin-state transition. The spin-state transition that is seen at 105 K at ambient pressure, from a low-temperature high-spin state to a high-temperature low-spin state, has been observed to be shifted to lower temperatures as pressure is applied. From our calculations, we find that a smaller unit cell volume favors the metallic low-spin state, which becomes more stable at 5 GPa. Similar physics appears in the related compound La3Ni2O6, but on a different energy scale, which may account for why the transition has not been observed in this material.

Ground-state oxygen holes and the metal–insulator transition in the negative charge-transfer rare-earth nickelates

The metal-insulator transition and the intriguing physical properties of rare-earth perovskite nickelates have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Nonetheless, a complete understanding of these materials remains elusive. Here we combine X-ray absorption and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopies to resolve important aspects of the complex electronic structure of...

How does the spin-state of Co ions affect the insulator-metal transition in Bi2A2Co2O8 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba)?

The misfit layered Bi2A2Co2O8 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) compounds experience an insulator to metal transition as A's ionic radius increases. This feature is contradictory to the conventional wisdom that larger lattice constant favors insulating rather than metallic state, and is also difficult to be reconciled using the Anderson weak localization theory. In this paper, we show from the first-principles ...

Mott transition in a valence-bond solid insulator with a triangular lattice.

We have investigated the Mott transition in a quasi-two-dimensional Mott insulator EtMe{3}P[Pd(dmit){2}]{2} with a spin-frustrated triangular-lattice in hydrostatic pressure and magnetic-field [Et and Me denote C2H5 and CH3, respectively, and Pd(dmit){2} (dmit=1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate,dithiolate) is an electron-acceptor molecule]. In the pressure-temperature (P-T) phase diagram, a v...

Metal-insulator transition in ultrathin LaNiO3 films.

Transport in ultrathin films of LaNiO(3) evolves from a metallic to a strongly localized character as the film's thickness is reduced and the sheet resistance reaches a value close to h/e(2), the quantum of resistance in two dimensions. In the intermediate regime, quantum corrections to the Drude low-temperature conductivity are observed; they are accurately described by weak localization theor...

Pressure-induced spin-state transition of iron in magnesiowüstite (Fe,Mg)O

We present a detailed theoretical study of the electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of magnesiowüstite Fe1−xMgxO with x in the range between 0 and 0.875 using a fully charge self-consistent implementation of the density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory method. In particular, we compute the electronic structure and phase stability of the rocksalt B1-structured (Fe,Mg...
